SLU Looks to Take Conference Championships & Earn National Qualifications

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team heads to Birmingham this weekend looking to take home a title at the Southland Conference Championships, which run Sunday and Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Lions head into the Conference Championships with some momentum after Slavko Stevic was named the Southland's Field Athlete of the Week after his performance at the LSU Twilight indoor meet where his high jump of 2.15m (7'0.5") gave him the best mark in the conference heading into the championships.

Also last week in Baton Rouge, Katrine Olsen set a Southeastern school indoor record with a high jump of 1.75m (5'8.75"), the second-best high jump in the Southland this indoor season.

Aside from the aforementioned high jump events, the Lions have a top-three performance in the conference in seven other events heading into the conference meet. On the track, Eugene Omalla's time of 47.49 in the 400m dash at the Howie Ryan Invitational is second best. He joins his brother Jaimie Omalla, Omri Shiff, and Agerian Jackson on the 4x400m relay team which currently has the best time in the conference at 3:12.77 which was also achieved at the Howie Ryan. The Lions also have a second-best time in the distance medley, which was achieved back in December at the Birmingham-Southern Indoor Icebreaker.

Back on the field, Thomas Nedow, who was also a Southland Field Athlete of the Week during the season, has the third best throw in the shot put in the conference at 17.07m (56') from the McNeese State Indoor #2 Meet. On the women's side, Kristian Jackson has the Southland's best shot put which she obtained at the Howie Ryan with a throw of 14.76m (48'5.25"). Terrell Webb has the conference's best weight throw this season, accomplished back the BSC Indoor Icebreaker at 18.11m (59'5"). December also saw the Lions get the best triple jump in the conference back at BSC.

The Southland Conference Championships kick off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday with the men's 60m dash. It concludes Monday afternoon with the men's 4x400m relay wrapping up the competition.
