Southeastern Continues Undefeated Start With 9-0 Victory Over FAMU

SLU improves to 9-0 in 2023 with mercy-rule win in Mardi Gras Mambo finale

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team continued its school-record unbeaten streak to open the 2023 season with a 9-0 victory over Florida A&M on the final day of the Mardi Gras Mambo Sunday at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

The Lady Lions (9-0) outhit the visiting Rattlers (2-8), 8-3, on the way to the victory.

Bailey Krolczyk and Lexi Johnson hit matching three-run home runs to pace the Southeastern offense, while Cam Goodman set the table, finishing 3-for-3 at the top of the lineup.

Leah Marshall (1-0) earned her first collegiate victory in the circle, allowing two hits and striking out five in four scoreless innings. Lainee Bailey tossed a scoreless fifth to share the shutout with Marshall.

Through two weeks, everything has been clicking for SLU head coach Rick Fremin and his Lady Lions. On the way to outscoring opponents, 64-10, this season, Southeastern is hitting .380 as a team and has a .987 team fielding percentage and eight pitchers have combined for a 1.23 team ERA.

"We were able to show we could handle adversity in two close wins," Fremin said. "Our defense has taken care of the ball and our pitching staff has done a good job of giving us a chance no matter who we've run out there. We're also getting good production throughout the lineup. We have to clean up some things in the running game, but we look forward to continuing to improve each time we take the field."

Southeastern will continue its 21-game road swing when it heads to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to compete in the Easton Bama Bash. SLU's five-game tournament slate opens Friday, versus Indiana State at 11 a.m. Live stats, provide by host Alabama, will be accessible via the softball schedule page at www.LionSports.net/sidearmstats/softball.
