HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will open the 2023 season while the basketball, softball, track, tennis and beach volleyball teams will also be in action during this week in Southeastern Athletics.
 
The defending Southland Conference Tournament champion Lions will welcome Lafayette for a four-game series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The series opens with a 6 p.m. contest Friday. General admission tickets are available for $5 every Friday during the season.
 
The two teams will meet for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. Fans will have a chance to win prizes by playing Baseball Bingo every home Saturday at the Pat. The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday. All military personnel (active and veterans) will receive free admission every Sunday with a military ID.
 
The SLU men's basketball team (14-12, 8-5 SLC) will be looking to bounce back from a two-game skid and enters the week two games off the conference lead. The Lions travel to Northwestern State for an 8 p.m. contest and will face Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. league contest.
 
The Southeastern women's basketball team (15-8, 10-3 SLC) is alone atop the SLC standings and carries a four-game winning streak into this week's road trip. The Lady Lions take on NSU Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The Lady Lion softball team (3-0) will look to continue its undefeated start to the 2023 season this week. SLU starts the week at home, hosting Louisiana Tech Wednesday at 5 p.m. at North Oak Park.
 
Southeastern then opens a stretch of 21 games away from home over the weekend, when it heads to Youngsville, Louisiana to compete in the Mardi Gras Mambo. The Lady Lions face Manhattan (2 p.m.) and Toledo (4 p.m.) Friday, Gardner-Webb (3 p.m.) and St. Thomas (5 p.m.) Saturday and Florida A&M Sunday at 11 a.m.
 
The SLU men's and women's track and field teams will compete in its final meet before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. The Lions and Lady Lions will compete in the LSU Twilight Friday in Baton Rouge.
 
The Southeastern tennis team (0-2) returns to action this week. SLU heads to South Alabama Saturday for a 1 p.m. nonconference match in Mobile, Alabama.
 
The Beach Lion volleyball team will hold its final dress rehearsal before next week's season opener. SLU will host the intrasquad Green and Gold match Wednesday at 5 p.m.

This week's Southeastern baseball and basketball games, as well as Wednesday's softball game, will all air on ESPN+. The 2023 edition of Inside Southeastern Baseball with Matt Riser debuts Monday at noon from the patio at Cate Street Seafood Station. Riser will join co-host Allen Waddell at lunchtime every Monday during the season for the 60-minute show, talking the latest in Southeastern baseball. Cate Street Seafood Station is located at 308 S. Cate Street, next to the railroad tracks in downtown Hammond. The show can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via both the Lions Gameday Experience and TuneIn apps.

The latest episode of Inside Southeastern Basketball with David Kiefer will air Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM. Airing weekly on Tuesdays through Feb. 21 from Rainbow Daiquiris (14384 W. Thomas St.), the hour-long show will be hosted by Kiefer and Mark Willoughby and cover all things Lion Basketball.
