HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team will come home with eight new medals and three new personal bests after a solid day at the Howie Ryan Invitational at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
The honors for Southeastern rolled in quickly once the field events started the day as
Slavko Stevic set his highest mark so far this season in the high jump with a 2.14m (7'0.25") leap, good for gold in the event.
Shortly after that,
Terrell Webb earned a bronze medal in the weight throw competition as he unleashed a toss of 17.96m (58'11.25"). Meanwhile, also in the weight throw,
Seth Pagart set a new personal best with a toss of 14.9m (48'10.75").
But most of SLU's prizes on the day came on the track.
Cole Palmer got that going with a personal best in the 60m hurdles preliminaries with a time of 8.29 seconds, good enough to qualify for the finals where he was one of two Lions to make the final eight, joining
Olu Ogunyemi. Ogunyemi would set his own PB in the final of that event with a time of 8.14 seconds. Ogunyemi and Palmer finished fifth and sixth in the finals, respectively, with Palmer resetting his PB again with an 8.16.
SLU's most dominant showing of the day came in the men's 400m dash as the Lions swept the podium and all four Southeastern runners finished in the top five.
Eugene Omalla took the gold with a 47.49,
Agerian Jackson took silver at 48.72,
Jaimie Omalla got the bronze at 48.79, and
Omri Shiff finished fifth at 49.0.
Javon-Taye Williams earned bronze in the 800m dash with a time of 1:53.98.
SLU's last two prizes on the day came in the 4x400 relays where both the men and women medaled to end the day. On the women's side, the team of Alexandra Cleveland,
Indya Jackson,
Esther Nwanze, and Jacqueline Thring won the silver medal with a time of 3:56.43 in the final. The men's team of the Omalla brothers, Shiff, and Jackson won gold with a time of 3:12.77 to close out the competition.
With just two weeks remaining before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, the Lions face their final tune-up back in Baton Rouge next Friday at the LSU Twilight Meet in the Carl Maddox Field House.
