PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team opened up the fall season at the Princess Resorts College Cup that wrapped up Sunday.
The Lions were part of a round-robin tournament field with Wyoming and Omaha. Southeastern went 3-2 on the week versus the Cowgirls and Mavericks.
Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes was pleased with his team's efforts in the opening weekend.
"We showed a lot of positive things and we played better as the week progressed, which was encouraging," Hayes commented. "We have a lot of new faces this season and many of them showed that they will have an immediate positive impact on our team."
Hayes was particularly pleased with the team's performance in doubles play. The All-Southland Conference duo of
Putri Insani and
Flory Bierma was perfect in the opening tournament, while
Carla del Barrio teamed with
Alba Perez and
Nadia Hitzman for doubles wins.
Gabrielle Dekkers and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa also were 2-1 in doubles as a tandem.
In singles play, Hitzman, Perez, Insani,
Kate Oborina and
Jordan Burdett all collected wins during the week.
"As we move forward, we're concentrating on closing the gap between our team and the upper echelon of the Southland Conference," Hayes said. "This week was a good first step in that process."
Southeastern will take select student-athletes to the UCA Fall Invitational set for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Conway, Arkansas.
