HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team to a 4-0 week, freshman shortstop Maddie Watson was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.
 
Watson is the fifth Southeastern player and second straight Lady Lion to receive conference weekly honors this season. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native joins teammates Audrey Greely (Feb. 22), Heather Zumo (March 8), Cam Goodman (March 21) and Lexi Johnson (April 18).  
 
Watson finished with a .545 batting average, two home runs, 12 RBI and a 1.545 slugging percentage in a 4-0 week for SLU (33-12, 10-2 SLC) that extended the team's win streak to seven games and gave Southeastern a share of the Southland Conference lead.
 
The freshman opened the week with a grand slam in a 13-0 win at Southern. Her three-run triple keyed a 5-0 win over HBU in Friday's series opener. Later that evening, Watson finished a single shy of the cycle, including her second grand slam of the week, in a 14-6 victory over the Huskies.
 
In her debut season in Hammond, Watson leads the Southland with 41 RBI (including a league-high 21 in conference games). She also ranks among the league leaders in slugging percentage (.579, 7^th), hits (43, 9^th), doubles (9, 8^th), triples (2, 5^th) and home runs (6, 8^th).
 
The Lady Lions close out their regular season road schedule with a three-game Southland Conference series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday and closes Saturday at 12 p.m. Friday's games will be televised on ESPN+, while Saturday's contest can be viewed on the Islander Digital Network.
