MCKINNEY, Texas – After winning two of its last three tournaments and finishing in the top four in four consecutive tournaments, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's golf team looks to ride its momentum into the 2022 Southland Conference Championship beginning Monday at 8 a.m. at Stonebridge Country Club (Dye Course).
Â
Southeastern enters the conference championship having not played since March 29 at the Ellendale Intercollegiate in Houma, Louisiana. However, the Lions won the tournament as they picked up their second team title in three weeks. SLU also earned the Colin Montgomerie Invitational team championship back on March 8 in Spring, Texas.
Â
The Lions will look to the group of
Logan Kuehn,
Cameron Mobley,
Grayson Glorioso,
Charlie Forster and
Michael Landry to bring home a conference title. All five players have been a model of consistency, under seventh-year SLU golf head Coach
Jake Narro, as each player has a stroke average between 73.50 and 75.00 this season.
Â
Landry, a sophomore, leads the way at 73.50 as he has shot 75 or lower in nine of his 12 rounds this spring. Landry also won the individual championship at the CMI and placed third at Ellendale.
Â
Mobley, out of Brandon, Mississippi, is right behind Landry at 73.55. The sophomore has three top 10 finishes to his credit this season, including 14 of 20 rounds where he shot 75 or lower.
Â
Kuehn (74.16 stroke average) is fresh off a tournament individual title at Ellendale, the Lions' senior claimed his first career title as he shot -6 for the tournament with three straight rounds under par (69, 71, 70). The Lake Charles, Louisiana native also finished runner up at the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate after shooting even par for the tournament.
Â
Forster, the Lions' newcomer, has placed in the top 13 three times this spring along with a 74.00 stroke average. Glorioso enters the week with a 75.00 and five straight top 25 finishes.
Â
Historically, SLU has had some success at the conference championships. The Lions have four league titles to their resume with wins in 2014, 2010, 2000 and 1998. Under Narro, Southeastern finished runner-up back in 2016 and fourth in 2019.
Â
The Lions will be joined in the tournament field by returning Southland teams HBU, UIW, New Orleans and Nicholls while welcoming two new teams to the fray. Augusta and Francis-Marion joined the league during the summer and will both be making their first appearances in the tournament.
Â
The 54-hole tournament is set for Monday-Wednesday with each day featuring 18 holes with a shotgun start.
