Jackson Sets Personal Best in Shot Put Moving to Second in Southland Standings

SLU competes well against nation's elite Saturday at LSU ALumni Gold

BATON ROUGE, La. – Kristian Jackson jumped to second in the Southland standings in the women's shot put for the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold meet at Bernie Moore.

Jackson, a senior, hurled 15.39m (50-6) which broke her career-high mark of 15.22m (49-11.25) set at the Southeastern Dual meet on March 18. Out of Zachary, Louisiana, Jackson ranks first in the discus and second in both the shot put and hammer throw in the Southland standings with the conference championships approaching.

"Kristian continues to improve this year," said SLU track and field head coach Corey Mistretta. "It's exciting to see just how far she can go this year."

On the men's side, the Lions faced a star-studded field in the 400m highlighted by 2021 Olympic Champion Steven Gardiner. Southeastern's D.J. Morton performed well setting a personal best in the event drawing Mistretta's praise.

"I was very impressed with D.J.," said Mistretta. "He's worked hard to get himself in condition and I'm excited to see how much faster he can get."

Next up, SLU will begin final preparations for the Southland Outdoor Championships, which are Friday, March 6-8 at Turner Stadium in Humble, Texas.

"I feel like we had a really good day overall," said Mistretta. "Of course, we can always be better but we got to compete against some really good competition. We saw several former Olympians so it was good for our athletes to see that. I think it drives them when they see that caliber of athlete in person and could help us get ready for the postseason."
