HAMMOND, La. – Katrine Olsen set a school and Southeastern Track Complex record in the high jump for the Southeastern Louisiana University women's track and field team Saturday at the Strawberry Relays.
Olsen, a freshman, jumped 5-11 (1.80m) which broke the school record of 5-10.25 (1.78m) held by Janice Ezegbunam since May 16, 2004 at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
The facility record was held by both HBU's Samara Hodges (2018) and UL Lafayette's Lindsey Harmon (2014) at 5-8.75 (1.74m). Olsen's performance Saturday ranks her 11
th in the NCAA East Regional Qualifying standings.
"Katrine continues to impress us as a freshman," said fifth-year SLU track and field head coach
Corey Mistretta. "She finds ways to get better regularly as she proved today in a very competitive high jump event by breaking a pair of records."
Kristian Jackson and
Lara Zupanc also had good days for the Lady Lions as Jackson won the discus while Zupanc finished runner up in the pole vault.
Jackson, out of Zachary, Louisiana, threw 169-9 (51.74m) as she is the only female in the conference to throw over 50 meters this year.
Zupanc bolted into the air with a 3.75m vault to finish second Saturday. The junior from Slovenia set a personal best of 12-3.5 (3.75m) as she now ranks fourth in the Southland in the event.
On the men's side,
Gerson Pozo won the 400m while
Agerian Jackson claimed the 400m hurdles crown with both setting personal bests.
Pozo, a Madrid, Spain native, sprinted to a 47.22 finish in the 400m as he now ranks fourth in the conference in the event. Pozo held off former Lion and 2021 NCAA All-American
Jonathon Sawyer in the 400m Saturday, who was running unattached, finishing in 47.37.
Sawyer holds the SLU school record in the 400m, flying to a 45.18 at the NCAA East Prelims back on May 28, 2021.
Jackson, from Trelawny, Jamaica, crossed the finish line in 51.64 seconds to win the 400m hurdles Saturday. The junior moved up to second in the Southland rankings in the respective event.
"We were expecting this to be a pretty good meet and it turned out that way," said Mistretta. "It's nice to be going in the right direction with just two weeks to go until the conference championships. We had a lot of personal bests today and I'm pleased top to bottom with our performance."
Next up, Southeastern will continue preparation for the 2022 Southland Outdoor Championships May 6-8 in Humble, Texas as they will compete in the LSU Alumni Gold meet Saturday, April 23 at Bernie Moore Track in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
