STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University Track and Field team had a true 'field day' this weekend as Katrine Olsen and
Slavko Stevic won the high jump events while
Thomas Nedow and
Kristian Jackson won the discus competitions this weekend at the Al Schmidt Relays hosted by Mississippi State.
Olsen, out of Skive, Denmark, jumped a season-best 5-6.75 (1.73m) to claim the women's title Friday. The freshman's performance also put her in the top 20 in the nation in the high jump, holding her spot atop the Southland Conference rankings.
Stevic, the reigning Southland Men's Indoor High Jump Champion, also set a season-high point on his way to winning the event Saturday. The Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia native made 7 feet (2.14m) to best the field as he, too, keeps his top Southland ranking.
Nedow earned the discus crown Friday besting the 20-man field. The Brockville, Canada native threw 160-4 (48.86m) outlasting Mississippi State's Dylan Finley (48.31m). Saturday, the Lions' freshman bounced back with another solid performance placing third in the shot put (50-10.25-15.50m).
Jackson won the discus Friday, throwing 163-9 (49.91m). The senior also finished runner up Saturday in the shot put as the Zachary, Louisiana native marked 47-8 (14.53m). Jackson currently owns the top spot in the Southland in both the discus and shot put with the conference outdoor championship less than six weeks away.
Bradley Makuvire, who competed Friday at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State, broke his own school record in the 10k running 29:36.90. Makuvire, out of Zvishavane, Zimbabwe, passed his previous all-time school outdoor mark of 30:01.51 set April 2, 2021 at the Sound Running Meet.
Chelsea Harrington, out of Slidell, Louisiana, had a nice showing Saturday in the women's long jump. The junior transfer from Nicholls marked 19-4.25 (5.90m) as she now sits in second in the Southland rankings in the event.
"It was a good weekend," said SLU track and field head coach
Corey Mistretta. "We are moving in the right direction. We had some really good performances this weekend in the field and on the track. But we just want the momentum going into next week and we also need to toughen up a little bit," said Mistretta.
Next up, Southeastern will compete in the Southern Miss Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
