SLU’s Jackson, Omalla Named Southland Athletes of the Week

Southeastern Duo Earns Southland Weekly Honors

HAMMOND, La. – After breaking Southeastern Track Complex records last Friday in the Southeastern Dual Meet, Kristian Jackson and Eugene Omalla both earned Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Wednesday.

Jackson, a senior, was tabbed the Southland Women's Field Athlete of the Week after breaking a facility and school record in the discus Friday. The Zachary, Louisiana product fired a 170-9 (52.04m) throw to break the SLU record of 163-11 (50.26m) formerly held by ex-Lady Lion Alexia Stein.

Jackson's mark also broke a seven-year facility record, which was carried by Northwestern State's Rechelle Bessard (164-5, 50.10m), set at the 2015 Southland Outdoor Championships.

As a result of Jackson's performance Friday, she sits atop the Southland rankings in the discus and currently has the 18th best mark in the nation.

Omalla, out of Chawolo, Uganda, bolted around the track Friday in the 400m in 46.04, earning Southland Men's Track Athlete of the Week. The time broke a seven-year facility record held by Central Arkansas's Chance Tanner (46.09) at the 2015 Southland Outdoor Championships.

The Lions' sophomore newcomer, Omalla is now ranked first in the 400m in the Southland and has the second fastest outdoor time in the nation in 2022 behind Texas A&M's Moitalel Mpoke (45.84).

Omalla, Jackson and Southeastern will continue their preparation for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships which are set for Friday, May 6-Sunday, May 8 at Turner Stadium in Humble, Texas.
