BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bradley Makuvire won the men's 3k race while Kristian Jackson and Thomas Nedow claimed the shot put titles for the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team Monday during the final day of the Southland Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.
 
Makuvire, who earned the 5k crown Sunday, won the 3k Monday finishing in 8:17.98 ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Dennis Kipngeno. Out of Zvishavane, Zimbabwe, Makuvire collected 20 points for the weekend for the Lions.
 
Nedow won his second straight indoor championship in the shot put. Out of Brockville, Canada, Nedow threw 54-11.5 (16.75m) on his fourth attempt to finish atop the podium. Nedow's teammate, Robin Vrbek, finished fourth in the event to give the Lions 15 points.
 
After a fourth place finish at the 2021 conference indoor meet, Jackson bested the women's shot put field Monday with a mark of 49-1 (14.96m) on her third attempt.
 
Indya Jackson also had a terrific day for the Lady Lions. Out of Zachary, Louisiana, Jackson finished runner up in the 400m (56:03). The junior also placed sixth in the 200m to score 11 points for the day.
 
Wjuantereuas Rodrigue, who finished fifth in the long jump Sunday, was runner up in the triple jump Monday (47-8.5, 14.50m) giving the Lions eight points. Slavko Stevic, the two-time Southland high jump indoor champion, placed eighth in the long jump for one point.
 
Newcomer Noah Kiprotich also had a good showing in his first conference championship. Out of Kapsabet, Kenya, Kiprotich took home third place in the 800m giving the Lions six more points for the day.
 
Also in the men's distance, Julius Kemper scored one point in the one-mile race with his seventh place finish.
 
In the men's 400m, Eugene Omalla, Agerian Jackson and Gerson Pozo finished fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively for the Lions, combining for nine points.
 
Late in the day, both the Lions and Lady Lions' 4x400 team finished fourth. The women's team consisted of Porshia Miles, Camille McGee, Indya Jackson and Destinee St. Pierre. The men's team included Omalla, Pozo, Agerian Jackson and Damon Herod.
 
"We ended the weekend on a really high note," said SLU track and field head coach Corey Mistretta. "It started with Kristian (Jackson) and Tommy Nedow this morning with their wins. So we stepped up in a lot of areas and I was very pleased with the way the team came out and competed today. But we still have a lot of work to do before the outdoor championships to get to where we need to be. The team is really young and we are learning how to compete so we are getting there, it just may take some time."
 
The Lions finished in fifth place with a total of 95 points for the weekend while the Lady Lions placed sixth with 52 ½ points. UIW won the men's team championship while McNeese took home the women's title.
