NEW ORLEANS, La. – Four members of the Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team combined for two singles and a doubles title at the Dillard Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday.
Facing nationally ranked competition,
Gabrielle Dekkers and
Carla Del Barrio both advanced to the finals in the top singles flight and with a guarantee the trophy was heading back to Hammond elected to share the tournament title.
Alba Perez took the "B" singles flight, while Dekkers and Panatchakorn "Fresh" Suanarsa paired to win the doubles draw.
"We were fortunate to have an opportunity to face great competition so close to home," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We're starting to see our players consistently take the things we've been working on this fall, put them to use and see positive outcomes as a result."
The championship quartet for Southeastern was completely comprised of new players. Dekkers (Utah State), Del Barrio (Nevada) and Perez (Lamar) all transferred in prior to the season, while Suanarsa is in her first collegiate season.
"We've seen our new players all improve greatly since they've been in Hammond," Hayes commented. "More than the results, the thing I was most pleased with this weekend is the positive attitude this group played with all weekend. If we continue to play with that mindset we're going to have a lot of success this spring."
