2023 Baseball Schedule Offers Fresh Test for SLU

HAMMOND, La. – The 2023 season for the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will feature a bit of a different look, featuring four first-time opponents for head coach Matt Riser's Lion squad.

St. John's, Memphis, Alabama A&M and opening-weekend foe Lafayette College all square off against Southeastern for the first time in program history.

SLU will host 28 games at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, comprising more than half of its regular-season slate. The Southland Conference's annual attendance leader welcomes postseason participants LSU, Southern Miss and UL Lafayette to Hammond.

The season kicks off at home Feb. 17-19 with a four-game series against Lafayette College, including a scheduled Saturday doubleheader. Other non-conference home series include Samford (Feb. 24-26) and Memphis (March 17-19).

An intense non-conference schedule last season, the seventh-toughest in the nation, helped push the Lions to a 2022 Southland Tournament championship and a return to NCAA postseason play.

Reprising last season's Regional trip to Auburn, Southeastern travels back to the plains, March 10-12, for a weekend series against the Tigers. Part of a seven-game road trip, the Lions kick it off with a series at Jacksonville (March 3-5) and a midweek contest at Alabama A&M (March 8).

LSU returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, May 2, for the first time since a 5-4 Southeastern win during the 2018 season.

Other midweek action includes home games against St. John's (Feb. 27), Southern Miss (March 14), UL Lafayette (April 12), Jackson State (April 18) and South Alabama (May 16). The Lions also head out on the road for games at each of the last four opponents.

With a healthy dose of fresh faces on the non-conference slate, Southland action offers an air of familiarity with the return of Lamar to the fold. Conference play begins the weekend of March 24-26 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and comprises a total of eight weekend series.

The aforementioned Cardinals of Lamar, along with McNeese, Northwestern State and UIW, journey to Hammond for Southland matchups. SLU also embarks on conference trips to Houston Christian, New Orleans and Nicholls to round out the Southland docket.
