NATCHITOCHES, La. – Freshman
Kate Oborina won the Orange singles draw to highlight the Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team's efforts at this weekend's Natchitoches Women's Care/Lady Demon Invitational that wrapped up Saturday on the Northwestern State campus.
Other highlights for SLU included
Flory Bierma and
Putri Insani teaming to win the consolation bracket of the Purple doubles draw. Oborina teamed with
Sofya Kanarskaya for third place in the White doubles draw.
"We've been working hard these past two weeks after the opener and we saw some improvement," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "Our attitude was great and even though we didn't get all the results we'd like, we can build on the effort."
Oborina, playing in her second tournament as a Lion, opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stephen F. Austin's Lucy Furness. In the semifinals, she swept past Lamar's Noelia Lorca, 6-3, 6-4. Oborina had to rally in the finals before defeating Jimena Garbino of ULM, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
"This was a great weekend for Kate," Hayes commented. "She played very smart and used her weapons to win the big points. Kate has a bright future and will continue to improve."
After dropping their opening round match, Bierma and Insani defeated the SFA duo of Furness and Paula Cerda, 6-3. In the consolation finals, the SLU pair handled SFA's Al No Fabre and Zala Ule in a 6-2 victory.
Bogi Csordas and
Polina Sleptsova defeated Jayci Wong and Alba Perez, 6-3, in the opening round of the White bracket. The SLU pair would eventually fall to teammates Oborina and Kanarskaya, 6-1, in the third-place match.
"There were a lot of things we did very well in doubles this weekend," Hayes said. "We worked real hard on being aggressive and putting pressure on our opponents."
Southeastern will return to the courts on Oct. 8-10 at the West Florida tournament.
