Kelley, Gordon Named 2020-21 Southeastern Athletes of the Year

Senior quarterback, senior midfielder emerge from exciting spring as department's standout performers

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University has named senior quarterback Cole Kelley and senior midfielder Megan Gordon the 2020-21 Southeastern Male and Athlete of the Year.

Since 1990-91, SLU has selected a Male and Female Athlete of the Year. The Athletes of the Year are selected by Southeastern head coaches and administrative staff.

Kelley's recognition marked the second straight season a Southeastern football student-athlete has been named the school's Male Athlete of the Year, as former teammate Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund received the honor for 2019-20. Kelley is the fourth Lion football student-athlete to earn Athlete of the Year recognition, as the Lafayette, Louisiana native joined Adeyemi-Berglund, as well as SLU Athletics Hall of Famers Bryan Bennett (2013-14) and Robert Alford (2012-13).

Gordon is the eighth Southeastern soccer representative to be tabbed SLU Female Athlete of the Year. The Clophill, England product is the latest in the lineage of former Lady Lion standouts that includes Hope Sabadash (2013-14), Maiya Cooper (2011-12), Dana Mayer (2009-10), Kim McNally (2004-05), Kendra Oney (2003-04), Becca Weingartner (2001-02) and Allison Holladay (1999-00).

Kelley received the Stats Perform FCS Walter Payton Award – the Heisman of the FCS – as the nation's top offensive player, as well as being a consensus All-American selection. He was also named the Offensive Player of the Year for the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana.

Kelley threw for 2,662 yards and accounted for 27 touchdowns (18 passing, seven rushing and two receiving). He ranked among the national leaders in completion percentage (4th), completions per game (4th), passing efficiency (159.0, 7th), passing touchdowns (5th), passing yards (2nd), passing yards per game (2nd), points responsible for (2nd), points responsible for per game (3rd) and rushing touchdowns (13th). Kelley threw for 300 yards or more in every game – topping 400-plus yards three times.

Gordon was the most well-rounded performer for a Lady Lion team that won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2015. She was the first All-Region performer for SLU since Sabadash, while also claiming All-Southland and All-Louisiana accolades.

An excellent student, she represented Southeastern on the All-South Region Scholar and Southland All-Academic teams. Gordon was credited with an assist in the semifinal win over Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Tournament semifinals on the way to a spot on the all-tournament team.
