HAMMOND, La. – Three members of the Southeastern Louisiana softball team were named to the 2021 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Collegiate Softball Teams, which were released by the LSWA on Tuesday.
Representing SLU were junior outfielder
Aeriyl Mass, freshman outfielder
Audrey Greely and junior pitcher
Heather Zumo. Mass was a first team selection, Greely was a second team choice, while Zumo was an honorable mention selection.
Mass is the first Lady Lion to earn first team All-Louisiana honors since former third baseman Heather Sherrill in 2008. The Lake Charles, Louisiana native added to her postseason trophy case after being previously named first team All-Southland Conference and first team Southland All-Academic.
Mass hit .368 with 39 runs, 64 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs, 30 RBI and 30 stolen bases in her first full season after transferring from UL Lafayette. She ranked among the Southland leaders in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, triples (two) and stolen bases. Mass also had a school record 17-game hitting streak from March 10 – April 9.
Greely is the first SLU freshman to claim All-Louisiana honors since former shortstop Sydney Booker in 2015. The Geismar, Louisiana native was named second team All-Southland last month.
In her first full collegiate season, Greely hit .400 with 35 runs, 50 its, seven doubles, three home runs, 22 RBI and 18 stolen bases. She was fourth in the Southland in batting average and ranked among the league's top 10 in slugging percentage (.560), on-base percentage (.479), runs, hits and triples (two). She batted .700 during the Southland Conference Tournament, capping a 4-for-4 performance with a walk off RBI in a win over Abilene Christian.
Zumo is the sixth Southeastern pitcher to earn All-Louisiana honors. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native joins
Alley McDonald (2019), Rachel Ray (2007), Summer Delauneville (2004), Monique Roussel (1998) and Carla Newsom (1993). Zumo was previously selected as an All-Southland third team selection last month.
Zumo established herself as the team's ace in her first full season out of LSU Eunice, where she was an honorable mention All-Louisiana choice in 2019. She finished 16-6 with a 2.33 ERA, striking out 145 and holding opponents to a .229 batting average in 153.1 innings pitched, ranking among the Southland leaders in ERA, opposing batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts and wins. Zumo threw a complete game no-hitter versus South Dakota in the season opener and then shared a second no-hitter with
Ellie DuBois in a win over Florida A&M later in the season.
All three All-Louisiana selections will be back in 2022 for SLU. The Lady Lions begin their preseason competition on Sept. 24 with a 5 p.m. 10-inning exhibition versus Northwest Florida State College at North Oak Park. Southeastern will open the 2022 season on Feb. 11, hosting Southeast Missouri at 5 p.m. on the opening day of Lion Classic I at North Oak Park.
