SLU Tops Nation in Stolen Bases for Sixth Straight Season

Lady Lions finish atop Division I with 2.96 stolen bases per game

HAMMOND, La. – Last week's conclusion to the 2021 softball season saw the Southeastern Louisiana softball team once again sit atop the Division I stolen base leaderboard.

Since head coach Rick Fremin took the helm of the SLU program prior to the 2016 season, speed on the base paths has been the Lady Lions' calling card. The 2021 Southeastern roster led the nation with 2.96 stolen bases per game and were second nationally with 151 steals.

SLU has led the nation for four straight seasons and in five of the last six campaigns in stolen bases per game. The Lady Lions have finished second in Division I in total steals in each of the past two seasons after leading the nation each year from 2016-19.

This year's aggressive attack was led by the trio of Aeriyl Mass, Lindsey Rizzo and Cameron Goodman. Mass (30 stolen bases – 15th nationally), Rizzo (30; 15th) and Goodman (29 – 20th) made Southeastern the only team with three players ranked in the Division I top 20 for stolen bases. All three will return to ignite the SLU offense in 2022.

The Lady Lions begins its preseason competition on Sept. 24 with a 5 p.m. 10-inning exhibition versus Northwest Florida State College at North Oak Park. Southeastern will open the 2022 season on Feb. 11, hosting Southeast Missouri at 5 p.m. on the opening day of Lion Classic I at North Oak Park.
