AUSTIN, Texas – James Benson II,
Donovan Storr,
Johnathon Sawyer and
Agerian Jackson tied a 12-year old school record in the 4x400 relay for the Southeastern Louisiana track and field team Friday at the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Benson, Storr, Sawyer, and Jackson ran a 3:06.79 in the 4x400 prelims tying the school record set at the 2009 Southland Outdoor Championships by George Cunningham, Jerel Butler, Shannon Glover and Adlus Wiltz.
The group finished second behind Texas (3:06.54) to qualify for the finals Saturday at 3:20 p.m. Friday's result ranks SLU third in the NCAA East Qualifying standings.
The 4x400 team's performance secured the fourth school record in two days. Friday, Benson II (400m),
Grant O'Callaghan (1500m) and
Adam Cortez (3k steeplechase) also broke school records in their respective events.
D.J. Ruffin finished second in the men's long jump with a mark of 25-8.25 (7.83m). With his performance Friday, the senior has the Southland outdoor high mark and is in the top 10 in the nation in the long jump.
SLU's
Madelyn McCabe finished sixth in the women's high jump with a mark of five feet, 7.25 inches (1.71m). The Cashion, Oklahoma native is now ranked fourth in the Southland in the event.
"Today was a special day for the Lions," said SLU track and field head coach
Corey Mistretta. "Madelyn started the day off for us by nearing her PB in the high jump, then the 4x4 guys came and knocked it out of the park. The record they matched was set by a very special group of guys on a very special day when they had to win the 4x4 at the conference championship to win the team title. The historical impact makes it even more special."
The meet continues Saturday as live video stream links and results will be available at the Southeastern track and field schedule page at LionSports.Net.
