MOBILE, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana track and field team begins the outdoor schedule Friday when they compete in the South Alabama Invitational Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at Jaguar Track.
Hosted by South Alabama, SLU will be competing against a field of 13 others including Alabama State, Huntingdon, McNeese, Meridian, Mobile, UNO, Southeast Missouri, Spring Hill College, Tennessee Tech, Troy, UC-Colorado Springs, West Alabama and West Florida.
The men's team features Jonathan Sawyer,
Grant O'Callaghan and
Stevon Crooks.
Sawyer won the 2020 Southland Indoor Championship in the 400m running an all-time Southland record 46.23. The Austin, Texas native hasn't raced outdoor since May 25, 2019 at the NCAA Division East Region Preliminary Rounds in the 400m. The senior will be in action Friday in the 200m and 4X400 relay.
O'Callaghan, a senior, raced in the Southland Cross Country Championships finishing fifth. However, the Flowery Branch, Georgia native hasn't seen the track since last year's indoor conference championships where he finished second in the 3k and help SLU to the DMR conference title. O'Callaghan will race in the 1500m Friday afternoon.
Crooks will be in action in the shot put for the first time in nearly two years. The senior last competed in the Southeastern/Southern Dual March 22, 2019. The Westmoreland, Jamaica product finished runner up in the shot put at the 2019 conference indoor championships Feb. 24 of that year. Crooks will see his first action outdoors since the NCAA East Prelims May 24, 2018 when he competes in the shot put Friday.
On the women's side Davis (shot put) and Wissing (javelin) will also look for good showings after long layoffs.
Davis, a senior, won the 2019 Southland Indoor Championship Indoor title in the shot put and finished runner up in the outdoor championships that year. The Watson, Louisiana native will see her first action Friday since March 2, 2020 at the conference indoor championships where she finished fifth in the shot put.
Wissing also has had a near two-year hiatus. Out of Emsdetten, Germany, Wissing has endured 22 months without action after finishing sixth in the 2019 Outdoor Championships May 23. She'll compete Friday in the javelin.
