HAMMOND, La. – Shea Foster looks to become just the second Lion to win an indoor national champion since the Southeastern Louisiana track program joined Division I when he competes in the NCAA Indoor National Championships 5K race Friday.

Foster will also compete in the NCAA Cross Country National Championship 10K race Monday.

Foster, a junior, will be in the indoor championships Friday at 3:05 p.m. in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Center.

The Cypress, Texas native earned his spot in the 5k race after setting an all-time Southland Conference Indoor Championship record (13:40.36) in the event Feb. 28th in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the eighth seed in the nation entering Friday's 5k race.

The NCAA Cross Country Championships 10k race is Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Stillwater, Oklahoma at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course.

"It's going to be tough," said Foster. "That's one of the toughest courses to race in the entire nation. My goal is to leave there at least an All-American (Top 40 finish)."

With his performance at the conference indoor championships, Foster earned USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and Southland Most Valuable Performer honors claiming the 3k, 5k and one-mile Southland titles.

If Foster is able to claim the 5k title, he will join Alex Young, the 2016 NCAA Indoor National Champion in the weight throw, as the only two Lions to win a Division I indoor national title.

"I'm excited to see how I compare against the nation's best," said Foster. "I'm just going to give it my best shot this weekend and see what happens.

Foster secured his spot in the cross-country championships after dominating the Southland Conference Championship 8k race. He finished in a conference championship record time 22:41.2 beating the rest of the field.

"This is a very exciting time for Shea Foster as well as Southeastern Athletics as a whole," said SLU track and field head coach Corey Mistretta. "Anytime we have someone from Southeastern competing for the National Championship it's a huge accomplishment. Shea has worked extremely hard to reach this point and he is ready for the challenge. He had a really good final training session and is feeling really confident. Once we arrive in Fayetteville he will have a couple of easy shakeout sessions, get some treatment, and rest up for Friday afternoon. I know Shea is excited to compete like a champion for the Lion Nation."

Friday's 5k race will be broadcast on ESPN3 while Monday's Cross Country 10k National Championship will be available on ESPNU. The races are available on www.WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. Web links to video and stats are available on the Track and Cross-Country schedule pages at www.LionSports.net.
