BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern men are in second place while the SLU women are in fifth after the first day of the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Shea Foster continues his remarkable stretch which includes winning the Southland Conference Cross-Country Championship Race last Sunday. The Cypress, Texas native set a Southland Conference Indoor Championship record in the 5k running 13:40.36, which is also 11^th nationally. The mark is good for a spot in the NCAA Indoor National Championships March 12 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

SLU's Adam Cortez and Bradley Makuvire finished second and fourth in the event to give the men's team a total of 23 points for the race.

Foster will also compete Monday in the finals of the one-mile race at 11:55 a.m. after finishing with the top qualifying time (4:14.50). Teammates Anthony Cordero and Parker McBride also qualified for the finals.

Slavko Stevic, the reigning Southland high jump champion, finished second in the event Sunday. The Serbia native jumped six feet, 10.75 inches (2.10m) to give the Lions eight more points totaling 31 for the day.

In the men's 400m, James Benson II and Algerian Jackson punched their ticket to the finals Monday at 12:20 p.m. Benson II will also be in the 200m finals Monday at 1 p.m.
Also for the men, Thomas Daigle qualified for the 800m finals. The redshirt sophomore ran a personal best of 1:54.41 earning a spot in Monday's final at 12:40 p.m.

For the women, freshman Madelyn McCabe set a school record in the pentathlon of 3708. The Cashion, Oklahoma product won the pentathlon high jump, finished second in the 800m and shotput, fifth in the 60m hurdles and sixth in the long jump.

SLU's Indya Jackson made it through to the finals in the 60m, 200m and 400m. The sophomore will compete in the 60m final Monday at 11:20 a.m. followed by the 400m at 12:10 p.m. and the 200m at 12:50 p.m.

Senior Sophie Daigle will also be in action Monday. The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native qualified for the one-mile finals after finishing third in the prelims. She'll be in action at 11:45 a.m.

Despite the great individual performances spread throughout the day, SLU head track and field coach Corey Mistretta was clear that the day could have been better.

"Quite simply, we've got a lot of work to do tomorrow," said Mistretta.
