BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Track and Field team will compete in the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Championships Sunday and Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

The SLU men look to defend their championship after claiming their first indoor championship since 2014 and the second in school history. The Lions are led by James Benson II, Slavko Stevic, Shea Foster and Thomas Nedow.

Benson II, a junior, finished runner up in the 400m behind teammate Johnathon Sawyer in a time of 47.05. The Charleston, Illinois native also finished fourth in the 200m as he looks for another solid terrific performance this year.

Stevic, a native of Serbia, is the reigning Southland Indoor champion in the high jump. The sophomore jumped six feet, 11 inches (2.11m) to claim the title. Stevic will be in action Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the high jump as he looks to defend his crown.

Foster, fresh off his victory in the Southland Cross Country Championship last Sunday, will compete in the one-mile and 3k races. The junior finished third in the one-mile in last year's conference championships setting a personal best of 4:15.84.

Nedow, a redshirt-freshman, will be in action in the shot put and weight throw. The Brockville, Canada native finished seventh in the shot put in the 2019 Southland Outdoor Championships. After redshirting the 2020 indoor season, Nedow set a personal best of 51-9.25 (15.78m) in the weight throw at the LSU Invitational last month.
On the women's side, Sophie Daigle, Kristian Jackson and Indya Jackson highlight the Lady Lions.

Daigle, a Donaldsonville, Louisiana native, will run in the one-mile and 3k races. The senior is coming off a fifth-place finish in the cross-country championships last week. Daigle also finished fourth in the 3k at last year's conference indoor championships.

Kristian Jackson will be in action in the shot put and weight throw. The junior set a personal best Jan. 16 in the weight throw (55-5, 16.89m) at the LSU Invitational. Out of Zachary, Louisiana, Jackson had a fourth-place finish in the shot put in last year's conference indoor championship.

Sophomore Indya Jackson looks to contend in the 400m race. Also from Zachary, Jackson placed fourth in the 400m last year setting a personal best 56.28. Jackson will also compete in the 60m race.

"We are very fortunate to be heading into the indoor championships on the heels of capturing the men's cross-country championship," said SLU track and field head coach Corey Mistretta. "The excitement level remains extremely high and everyone is motivated to capitalize on this momentum. We also had a really good final week of training and if the team can maintain the focus they have shown this week on Sunday it should put us in a very good position on Monday."
