HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team opened Southland Conference play with a 4-3 victory over UIW Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
 
SLU (3-4, 1-0 Southland) swept through doubles play and earned three singles victories. UIW fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league action.
 
"It's always good to start conference play with a win," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "We played good at times, but there's some things we need to work on moving forward. We need to keep our focus, enjoy today's win and get ready for ACU."
 
In doubles play, the duo of Putri Insani and Polina Sleptova (1-0) made their debut as a pairing with a 6-4 victory over Brandelyn and Lauren Fulgenzi on the No. 1 court. On No. 2, Flory Bierma and Annemart Kleijn (3-3) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over UIW's Alejandra Landaluce and Sophia Kermet.
 
A default win at No. 6 gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. On No. 2, Sleptsova (2-4) handled Landaluce, 6-2, 6-2. Bierma clinched the win on No. 4, defeating Taylor Parkinson, 7-5, 6-1.
