Southeastern Beach Lions Ready to Finally Hit the Sand

HAMMOND, La. – After its inaugural season was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic after just one week, the Southeastern Louisiana beach volleyball program finally returns to live action this weekend at the Green Wave Invitational at White Sands Volleyball Courts in Elmwood, Louisiana.

"This season, we have an opportunity to get out there and compete for an entire year," head coach Jeremy White said. "You'll be able to see us grow over time, competing against teams multiple times. It will be a big benefit to have had that opportunity to practice for a long period of time, but it will be nice to go up against an opponent more than once."

Southeastern will play four duals this weekend, two Friday and two Saturday. The Lady Lions will face fellow Southland member New Orleans at 12:30 p.m. Friday followed by a 4:30 p.m. dual against Utah. Saturday will see Southeastern match up with UAB at 12:30 p.m. and host Tulane at 4:30 p.m.

"We're talking about some of the more established programs in beach volleyball," White said. "I feel like they have the experience over us, but I think we're working really hard. We're excited to go up against them as we get our program off the ground."

Heading into the weekend, White has his lineup set with Mikalya Richard and Meagan Scuderi slated for the No. 1 dual, followed by Michelle Mirarchi and Hannah Barosh and No. 2, Linsey Sackett and Eryn Wilks at No. 3, and indoor players Marissa Calvaruso and Nylissa Snagg crossing over to play the No. 4 dual.

The Lady Lions will be shorthanded early in the season, just like several other programs, with the unexpected simultaneous indoor season.

"We've had student-athletes in the program for multiple years now, so you could say it's not really our first season," White said. "We have more new faces on our beach-specific roster, but we'll be running with eight for a while because we're heavily double-rostered. Later in the season, we'll mix in our indoor players who will crossover."
