Southeastern Louisiana 6, Alcorn State 1

LORMAN, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team opened up the 2021 spring season with a 6-1 victory over Alcorn State Saturday afternoon on the ASU campus.

Returning to the court for the first time in 324 days, the Lions (1-0) swept through doubles play and won five of six singles matches to return to the court victorious. Alcorn State, playing with five players, dropped to 0-4 overall.

"This was a fantastic start to the spring for us," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "We showed some nerves at times, but we kept fighting and played really well. We were just thankful to have the opportunity to get back on the court and compete."

SLU set the tone early, as the All-Southland Conference duo of Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez defeated Mikaela Konstantinova and Aizat Zholdakyeva, 6-2, on the No. 1 court. On court 2, the Lion pair of Flory Bierma and Annemart Kleijn made their debut as a team with a 6-2 win over Stefany Grlj and Kimberley Kaome to give SLU a 1-0 lead.

Southeastern clinched the victory with four straight set singles wins. On the No. 1 court, Insani held off Konstantinova, 6-4, 7-5. Polina Sleptsova made short work of Tangia Riley-Codrington with a 6-2, 6-1 win on No. 2.

On No. 4, Teodora Mitrovic clinched the win for SLU with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kaome.
Bierma was too much for Grlj on No. 5, earning a 6-3, 6-2 win.
