HAMMOND, La. – For the first time in 324 days, the Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team will take the court, opening the 2021 season with a pair of non-conference road matches this weekend in Mississippi.
SLU opens the weekend with an 11 a.m. match at Alcorn State (0-3) on Saturday. On Sunday, Mississippi State (2-0) hosts Southeastern for a 9 a.m. match in Starkville, Mississippi. Live video and stats for Sunday's match will be available at
www.HailStae.com/livewt.
The Lions will return six letter winners from last season's team, which had its season halted in March by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Putri Insani (7-4) and
Teodora Mitrovic (6-2) boasted the best singles records in the spring.
Flory Bierma,
Katya Cornejo,
Polina Sleptsova and
Ximena Yanez also return. Those six, along with freshmen newcomers
Annemart Kleijn and
Ariadna Perez, make up the 2020-21 roster.
Insani and Yanez were 8-3 on the No. 1 doubles court last spring and are expected to be the team's top doubles pairing. A pair of natives of The Netherlands – Bierma and Kleijn – are expected to comprise a formidable duo, while Cornejo and Sleptsova were 3-0 in Southland Conference play before the season ended last spring.
Alcorn opened the season with a pair of shutout losses to Tulane, before dropping its home opener, 6-1, vs. Jacksonville State on Thursday. Mississippi State, which hosts Memphis on Friday, has wins over Southern Miss and Furman to its credit this spring.
