CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Southeastern Louisiana for a 5-4 victory in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Chapman Field.
The Lady Lions (13-7, 0-1 Southland) and the host Islanders (6-14, 1-0 Southland) were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday. However, the nightcap was suspended due to darkness with the score tied, 5-5, in the 10
th inning.
Madisen Blackford led SLU with a pair of hits and three RBI in the series opener.
MC Comeaux scattered four hits and struck out six in six innings of work, but the Islanders were able to rally against closer
Sophie Hannabas (2-1) in the final inning.
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Aeriyl Mass drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Blackford to take the early advantage.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Islanders scored in the bottom of the first inning. A passed ball led to the inning's first run, then Haley Morse's RBI triple put the Islanders up, 2-1.
The score would remain the same, as Comeaux and Islander starter Kandace Johnson matched zeroes until the Lady Lions retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Audrey Greely and Mass walked, then
Lindsey Rizzo singled to load the bases with one out. Blackford then drove in Greely and Mass to put SLU ahead, 3-2. Heads up base running by Rizzo gave SLU an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.
After Hannabas struck out the first batter of the inning, she hit Daisy Gonzalez and gave up a single to Sammi Thomas to bring Ashleigh Sgambelluri to the plate representing the go-ahead run. Sgambelluri responded with a double to score Gonzalez, then she and Thomas would come home on a Lady Lion error to secure the walk-off victory.
