Appalachian State Edges SLU, 4-3, in Nonconference Contest

Lady Lions (15-8) host HBU for three-game series at North Oak Park starting Friday

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team opened a nine-game home stand with a 4-3 loss to Appalachian State in non-conference action Wednesday evening at North Oak Park.

Southeastern fell to 15-8 overall with the loss. The visiting Mountaineers improved to 13-9 on the season.

Cameron Goodman led SLU at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. Audrey Greely and Kelci Bodin were each credited with RBI. Alley McDonald (4-1) suffered her first loss in the circle for the Lady Lions.

Appalachian State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning versus SLU starter Tanner Wright. ASU's Tyler Thorp hit an RBI double over the head of Goodman in centerfield to stake the visitors to the early advantage.

Southeastern answered in the bottom of the second inning versus ASU starter Sydney Holland (8-2). Ella Manzer walked, Madison Watson reached on an error and Ali McCoy walked to load the bases with no outs. Bodin followed with an RBI single to score pinch runner Pryscilla Prince to tie the score.

Greely then reached on a Mountaineer error that allowed both Bodin and McCoy to score and gave SLU a 3-1 lead.

ASU loaded the bases itself in the top of the third inning versus McDonald. An RBI single by Thorp, a sacrifice fly by Sydney Russell and an RBI single by Caylie Kifer chased McDonald from the game and put the Mountaineers up, 4-3.

Heather Zumo replaced McDonald and struck out eight in 4.2 scoreless innings of rleif to keep Southeastern within striking distance.

The Lady Lions mounted their next threat in the bottom of the fifth inning. Goodman led off the frame with a triple, but was thrown out trying to score on an Aeriyl Mass grounder. Lindsey Rizzo singled to chase Holland, but Kenzie Longanecker came in and retired Madisen Blackford and Manzer to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mass singled and Blackford was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs, but Longanecker struck out Manzer to secure the victory.
