SLU Blanks UIW, 7-0, to Earn Southland Road Win

Lions (5-4, 1-1) pick up first league victory of 2020

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team closed out the opening weekend of Southland Conference play with a 7-0 road victory over UIW on Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.

SLU (5-4, 1-1 Southland) took the bottom two doubles matches and swept through singles play to earn its first league victory of the spring and snap a three-match skid. UIW fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in Southland play.

"We've been stressing how important doing the little things right is to our success and we did that much better today (than in Friday's 5-2 loss at Abilene Christian)," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes commented. "UIW fights for every point, so we earned today's victory. We have a young team, so we have a lot to improve on and are constantly learning as the season progresses."

Southeastern opened the match by taking the doubles point. On No. 2, Flory Bierma and Kim Bohlen (6-1, 1-0 SLC) handled Sophia Kermet and Taylor Parkinson, 6-2. The Lions took a 1-0 lead on the No. 3 court, as the SLU pair of Katya Cornejo and Polina Sleptsova (1-0, 1-0 SLC) earned a 6-3 victory over Alejandra Landaluce and Kinga Psut in their spring debut as a team.

Teodora Mitrovic (6-0, 2-0 SLC) remained undefeated in dual match singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 win on No. 5 over Parkinson. Insani (6-2, 2-0 SLC) tied Mitrovic for the team lead in singles victories on the top court, as she handled Jaeleana Dordan, 6-4, 6-3.

Bohlen (5-1, 1-1 SLC) bounced back from her first singles loss of the spring, defeating Psut, 6-1, 6-1, on No. 6. On court 4, Yanez (1-2, 1-1 SLC) rolled past Sara Djurdjevic, 6-0, 6-1, on the way to her first singles win of the spring.

Both Bierma (3-4, 1-1 SLC) and Sleptsova (3-4, 1-1 SLC) earned their first Southland singles wins. On No. 2, Bierma swept past Landaluce, 6-4, 6-3. Sleptsova outlasted Kermet 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, on the No. 3 court.
