SLU Drops Pair on Day Two of Reveille Classic

Lady Lions (13-6) open Southland play next week at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team closed out its preconference schedule with a pair of losses on the second day of the Reveille Classic Saturday at Davis Diamond on the Texas A&M campus.
 
SLU (13-6) opened the day with a 3-2 extra-inning loss to Kansas (8-9). Karlee Kraft led the Lady Lions with two hits, as she and Cameron Beal each scored runs. MC Comeaux (4-1) took the tough luck loss, allowing one earned run and four hits in a complete-game effort in the circle.
 
Texas A&M (14-7) avenged Friday's 8-0 loss to Southeastern in the Lady Lions' nightcap on Saturday. A seven-run third inning propelled the host Aggies to a 10-0 win over SLU. Kraft, Madisen Blackford and Cameron Goodman had two hits apiece in the loss for Southeastern.

Southeastern opens Southland Conference play with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 6 and closes with a noon contest on Saturday, March 7.
 
Game One – Kansas 3, Southeastern Louisiana 2
Kansas took the early lead in the top of the first inning. An RBI single by Sydnee Ramsey plated the first run of the frame and later in the inning another run came home on an RBI groundout by Morgyn Wynne to give the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead.
 
KU was poised to bust the game open in the third, loading the bases with two outs. However, Comeaux retired Miranda Rodriguez to keep Southeastern within two runs. The Lady Lions took advantage by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score at 2-2.
 
Southeastern looked to walk off with the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lindsey Rizzo reached on an error, Blackford was hit by a pitch and Ella Manzer walked to load the bases. However, Kraft was retired for the final out to send the game to extra innings.
 
With a runner placed on second via the international tie-breaker rule, Kansas was able to scratch across the eventual winning run. Kraft was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth inning, but was thrown out trying to score all the way from second on a sacrifice bunt by Ali McCoy. KU starter Hailey Reed (4-3) struck out Kelci Bodin to close out the win.
 
Game Two – Texas A&M 10, Southeastern Louisiana 0
Southeastern loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, as Rizzo walked, Blackford was hit by a pitch and Manzer walked to pack the bags with one out. However, Aggie pitcher Hannah Mayo (1-0) retired Kraft and McCoy to keep the Lady Lions off the board.
 
Makinzy Herzog led the bottom of the first inning off with a solo home run off SLU starter Heather Zumo (2-2) to give Texas A&M a 1-0 lead. Southeastern looked to get on the board in the second inning, as Bodin walked and Goodman singled to put a pair of runners on with one out. However, Mayo sat down Aeriyl Mass and Rizzo to maintain the Texas A&M lead.
 
The Aggies padded their advantage with doubles by Kelbi Fortenberry and Dani Elder to stretch the advantage to 2-0 after two innings. A single by Kraft and a double by McCoy put a pair of runners on for SLU in the top of the third inning, but both runners were left stranded.
 
Texas A&M blew the game open in the bottom of the third inning. The Aggies sent 11 batters during the seven-run frame to stretch the lead to 9-0. An error allowed Texas A&M to close out the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
SLU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth inning after Blackford, Manzer and Kraft opened the frame with consecutive singles. McCoy then struck out and Bodin hit into a double play to allow Texas A&M to close out the run-rule victory.
