HAMMOND, La. – With the first duals in program history two weeks away, the Southeastern Louisiana beach volleyball program is feverishly preparing for its inaugural campaign.
"We're improving dramatically," head coach
Jeremy White said. "We have a lot of kids that are double-rostered, so you always wonder how they'll take to it. They've done a great job, improving every single day and getting to the point where they're comfortable with each other. Pairs are starting to emerge. I think we're in a really good place."
Southeastern debuts March 6-7 in the New Orleans Invitational, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville (March 6 at 2 p.m.), Southern Miss (March 6 at 5 p.m.) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 7 at 10 a.m.) at Digs Volleyball Complex in Covington, Louisiana.
"We still need to figure out who our last partners are and our top 12 players," White said. "That's a little more fluid. There are opportunities for that to change throughout the season. We also have certain areas of the game that need improvement. Defensively, we're a little behind. We'll focus on that in our last few weeks. Really, though, it's about getting prepared to compete. We're training hard and getting better."
The Beach Lions will host in-state rival Nicholls in a doubleheader March 20 at the Southeastern Beach Volleyball Complex in North Oak Park. The LionUp Beach Bash is slated to be the first home event in program history. Southeastern will also host New Orleans for a dual, April 1 in Hammond.
At the end of the regular season, Southeastern will compete against fellow conference-members Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, New Orleans, Nicholls, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the inaugural Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Championship, April 17-19, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Although not yet an automatic qualification event, the 2020 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, consisting of eight at-large teams, will be held May 1-3 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
