Wyoming Tops SLU in Lions' Final Pre-Southland Tune-Up

Lions (4-3) open league play at ACU on Feb. 28

MCCOMB, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team closed out its pre-Southland schedule on Sunday evening with a 4-0 loss to Wyoming at the FitLife SportsPlex.

The match between the Lions (4-3) and Wyoming (5-1) was delayed three hours due to rain in the McComb area. The Cowgirls earned wins on the No. 2 and 3 doubles courts, as well as the top three singles courts to hand SLU the loss.

Despite the defeat, Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes was pleased with how his team competed against a talented Wyoming squad.

"I was really pleased with our effort tonight in a great environment for college tennis," Hayes said. "We were able to build on the positive things we did (on Thursday) versus UL Lafayette. We still have more work to do over these next two weeks before we open conference, but I'm encouraged with where our team is at this point in the spring."

SLU's top doubles tandem of Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez (6-1) extended their win streak to six matches on the No. 1 court, defeating the Wyoming pair of Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause.

On No. 2, the Lion pair of Kim Bohlen and Flory Bierma (5-1) suffered its first loss of the spring, 6-1, to Oleksandra Balaba and Maria Oreshkina. Wyoming took the doubles point thanks to a win on No. 3, as Clara Mansard and Ana Royo defeated Teodora Mitrovic and Katya Cornejo, 7-5.

In singles play, Insani (4-2) was outlasted by Oreshkina 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) on No. 1. On No. 2, Bierma (2-3) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Balaba. Krause closed out the match on court 3, defeating SLU's Polina Sleptsova (2-3), 7-5, 7-5.
