HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior second baseman
Jaquelyn Ramon added to her trophy case on Wednesday, when the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) presented her with the New Balance/NFCA Division I Golden Shoe Award at its annual press conference at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The Golden Shoe Award is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding base stealer. Ramon is the second Lady Lion to take home the award, as former teammate and current SLU assistant coach
Katie Lacour earned the accolade as a senior in 2016.
Ramon, a native of Channelview, Texas, received the honor after a record-breaking final campaign. The third team NFCA All-South Region and honorable mention All-Southland selection currently leads the nation with 63 stolen bases – the 10
th-highest single-season total in Division I history and a Southland Conference record. She also led the league with a single-season SLU record 51 runs scored and her team-high .347 batting average was sixth in the league.
The first recruit of head coach
Rick Fremin's Southeastern tenure, Ramon finished her four years in Hammond with a Southland career record of 184 stolen bases – the eighth-highest career total in Division I history. Ramon also etched her name in the program record books with 151 career runs – a new school standard.
Ramon played a big part in the Lady Lions' 34-23 season, which saw SLU set a new Southland record with a nation-leading 227 stolen bases – the 10
th-highest single-season total in Division I history. Southeastern, which led the league with a .301 team batting average, also set school records for hits (465) and walks (176) in a season.
