HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior second baseman
Jaquelyn Ramon and sophomore catcher
Ella Manzer were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region Teams, which were announced by the NFCA on Thursday.
Both Lady Lion honorees were third-team selections. For the first time in 20 years, Southeastern has placed multiple players on the All-Region teams. Ramon and Manzer join former Lady Lions
Katie Lacour (2015), Dee Rancher (1999), Misty Wagner (1999) and Voncia Bookman (1992, 1993) to give SLU six All-Region players in school history.
The Southland Conference had eight student-athletes earn All-Region notice. Manzer and Ramon were joined on the South Region squads by Nicholls pitcher Megan Landry and catcher Kali Clement, Central Arkansas second baseman Libby Morris and McNeese outfielder Justyce McClain. Stephen F. Austin first baseman Margarita Corona and Sam Houston State pitcher Lindsey McLeod were both named to the All-Central Region teams.
Ramon, a native of Channelview, Texas, was selected after a record-breaking final campaign. The honorable mention All-Southland selection currently leads the nation with 63 stolen bases – the 10
th-highest single-season total in Division I history and a Southland Conference record. She also led the league with a single-season SLU record 51 runs scored and her team-high .347 batting average was sixth in the league.
The first recruit of head coach
Rick Fremin's Southeastern tenure, Ramon finished her four years in Hammond with a Southland career record of 184 stolen bases – the eighth-highest career total in Division I history. Ramon also etched her name in the program record books with 151 career runs – a new school standard.
Manzer, who hails from Alexandria, Louisiana, enjoyed a breakout sophomore season on the way to earning second team All-Southland Conference honors. Her .341 batting average (8
th), 58 hits (5
th) and 13 doubles (6
th) all ranked her in the Southland's top 10, while she added three home runs and 31 RBI. Manzer got off to a torrid start to the 2019 campaign, earning the first two Southland Conference Hitter of the Week awards.
Ramon and Manzer played a big part in 34-23 season for the Lady Lions, which saw SLU set a new Southland record with a nation-leading 227 stolen bases – the 10
th-highest single-season total in Division I history. Southeastern, which led the league with a .301 team batting average, also set school records for hits (465) and walks (176) in a season.
