SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team completed a series sweep of Southland Conference rival Incarnate Word with an 18-0 shutout victory Saturday afternoon at H-E-B Field on the UIW campus.
The win was the most lopsided in school history for SLU (22-15, 10-5 Southland) a day after the Lady Lions set new school records for runs in a game (21) and a doubleheader (36) in Friday's sweep.
The 54 runs Southeastern scored is the most ever scored by the Lady Lions in a three-game Southland series, easily topping the 42 runs plated in a sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last season. SLU's
Alley McDonald (8-4) and
Shelby Sitzman combined to hold the host Cardinals (4-27, 2-10 Southland) to one hit in the shutout win.
Jaquelyn Ramon,
Mima Doucet,
Rebecca Skains and
Madisen Blackford each had three hits to fuel an 18-hit Southeastern attack. Skains tied a single-season school record with her 17
th double of 2019, while Blackford hit her team-high fourth home run of the season on the way to a five-RBI performance.
SLU touched up Lexi Shaw (0-1) for 11 runs in the top of the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate. Skains singled home
Jaquelyn Ramon and
Mima Doucet, then
Ali McCoy plated Skains with an RBI single to shortstop to put the Lady Lions up, 3-0, before UIW could make an out.
One out later, Blackford singled home
Ella Manzer and
Madison Watson.
Bobbi Smith followed with her team-high fifth triple of the season to score McCoy and Blackford. Ramon followed with a single just inside the left field line to bring home Smith.
After a Doucet single, Skains cleared the bases with a two-run double. Her 17
th double of her senior campaign matched the school mark set by Heather Sherrill (2007) and SLU Athletics Hall of Famer Voncia Bookman (1993). Skains would later score on an error to close out the inning's scoring.
Caroline Manzer led off the Lady Lion second with a single and later scored on a Doucet groundout to take a 12-0 lead. In the third, McCoy roped a two-run double to centerfield and scored on a
Caroline Manzer single to extend the advantage to 13-0.
Southeastern closed out the scoring in the fifth inning. A three-run home run by Blackford, followed by RBI by Doucet and
Pryscilla Prince, provided the final 18-0 margin.
The margin of victory topped the previous largest in school history. SLU twice has won by 17 runs or more, most recently in a 20-3 victory at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 8, 2015.
Southeastern will close out a four-game road swing at nationally-ranked UL Lafayette on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Live video, audio and stats, provided by the hosts, will be accessible on the softball schedule page at
