BATON ROUGE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Madisen Blackford hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Lady Lions to a 5-3 extra-inning victory in non-conference softball action Tuesday evening at Lady Jaguar Field.
With the win, Southeastern improves to 29-18 overall at the end of the non-conference portion of its schedule. Southern dropped to 8-22 overall with the loss.
Blackford led SLU at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing, while
Lindsey Rizzo and
Mima Doucet each drove in runs for the Lady Lions.
Tanner Wright (6-5) threw 3.1 innings of relief, striking out four and scattering three hits, to earn the win in the circle.
Southeastern also stole four bases to run their nation-leading single-season total to 208. The total is tied with the 2002 Georgia team for the 14
th-most in Division I history.
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, as SLU starter
Caitlyn VanHemelryck and SU ace Aubrion James (6-8) matched zeroes early on.
Jaquelyn Ramon reached and advanced all the way to third on a Lady Jaguar error. Rizzo then dumped a single into shallow center to plate Ramon and give the Lady Lions the advantage.
VanHemelryck was perfect through the first 11 batters until Kameri Mott roped a double into right centerfield. The Covina, California native shook it off and retired Shauna Knighten to keep SLU up, 1-0.
The Lady Lions added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Rizzo led off the inning with a single, stole second, moved to third on an
Ella Manzer fly out and then scored when Doucet laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to give Southeastern a 2-0 advantage.
Southern tied it up in its half of the sixth inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Hope Kruebbe hit a sharp single up the middle, but
Caroline Manzer gunned out Paytin Mercado at home to keep the Lady Jaguars off the board.
VanHemelryck gave way to
Shelby Sitzman, who hit a batter and walked another to force in a run. James then greeted Wright with a run scoring single up the middle, but
Caroline Manzer again threw out a runner at home to keep the scored tied at 2-2.
Wright and James both pitched out of trouble until SLU took the lead for good in the top of the ninth inning.
Cameron Beal was placed on second to start the inning and was promptly bunted to third by Doucet.
Ali McCoy then hit a grounder to short, but reached when Beal was looked back to third. After James retired
Caroline Manzer on a line out to third, Blackford ripped a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give SLU a 5-2 lead.
With one out and a runner placed on second in the bottom of the ninth, Christy Kelly hit a double down the right field line to pull Southern within, 5-3. Wright would not allow the hosts any closer, striking out Mateigha Tanner and forcing Adriana Rincon to hit a soft liner to
Rebecca Skains at first to secure the victory.
