SHSU Hands SLU Southland Loss

Lions back in action on Sunday, hosting SFA at noon

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana's Putri Insani picked up a singles victory, but it was not enough as the Lions dropped a 6-1 decision to Sam Houston State in Southland Conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions dropped the double point and five singles matches to fall to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in league play. Sam Houston State improved to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in Southland action.

"Sam Houston State is a tough team," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "They came out in doubles very fast and we just didn't adjust quickly enough. Putri picked up a huge win in singles, but we're going to have to be better Sunday against a very good Stephen F. Austin team to have a chance."

The SLU duo of Flory Bierma and Katya Cornejo (5-7, 3-2 Southland) picked up a 6-4 victory over Petra Kaszas and Karli De La Cruz Montalvo on the No. 3 doubles court, but SHSU countered with wins on courts 1 and 2 to take a 1-0 lead.

Insani (9-5, 6-3 Southland) earned Southeastern's lone point by handing SHSU's Sahaja Yamalapalli (15-4, 9-1 Southland) her first conference singles loss of the spring. However, the Bearkats earned straight-set singles wins on the other five courts to earn the victory.

Ceci Mercier and Ximena Yanez were both held out of singles play. The Lions have not played a match at full strength since March 24.

"We'll need everybody ready to play versus SFA on Sunday," Hayes commented.

First serve between Southeastern and the visiting Ladyjacks is set for noon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. Jambalaya will be served to the fans and Mercier will be honored for Senior Day.
