SLU Holds Off Lamar for First Southland Victory

Bierma's win on No. 6 clinches 4-3 Lion triumph

BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana's Flory Bierma rallied from a set down to secure the match-clinching singles victory, as the Lion tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over Lamar in Southland Conference action Friday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Southeastern (4-6, 1-1 Southland) snapped a four-match losing skid by winning the doubles point and splitting the six singles matches. Lamar fell to 3-9 this spring with an 0-2 league mark.

"This was a great win for us," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "We've remained focused on what we need to do to get better. To beat a team of Lamar's caliber on the road is a testament to our hard work and belief in one another."

Southeastern took the early lead by sweeping a very competitive doubles point. Bierma and Katya Cornejo (3-5, 1-0 Southland) snapped a four-match skid with a 6-4 win over Lamar's Sanja Jolic and Laura Sola Grau on the No. 3 court.

On No. 2, the new SLU duo of Vicky Scholz and Ceci Mercier (2-0, 2-0 Southland) clinched the point with a 7-5 victory over Natalia Molina and Bianca Vitale. Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez (4-2, 2-0 Southland) completed the sweep with a 7-6 victory over the Cardinal pair of Jasmin Buchta and Amelie Vossgaetter on the top doubles court.

Insani (5-2, 2-0 Southland) gave the Lions a 2-0 lead with a straight-set victory at the No. 1 singles position. Insani made short work of Buchta, 6-4, 6-1.

Mercier (4-2, 1-1 Southland) put SLU on the verge of a victory. She picked up her first conference singles win of the spring with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Molina on No. 4.

Lamar would not go away, quietly, picking up straight-set wins on courts 2 and 3. The Cardinals then tied it up when Vossgaetter outlasted Lion Bernadette Dornieden (1-3, 0-1 Southland), 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

The match would come down to the No. 6 singles court. Bierma (3-5, 1-1 Southland) rallied from a set down to defeat Sola Grau, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, to even the Lions' league mark.

Southeastern will return to the court on Sunday, facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in an 11 a.m. Southland road match.
