HOUSTON, Texas – Rebecca Skains doubled home the game-winning run to give Southeastern Louisiana a 4-3 11-inning victory over Houston Baptist in the rubber game of this week's Southland Conference softball series Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
Skains' tie-breaking double gave SLU (15-11, 4-2 Southland) its second straight series victory to open Southland play. Houston Baptist fell to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in league action.
For the second time in as many games, Southeastern went into the seventh down by one and was down to its last out. On Saturday,
Ella Manzer singled home
Jaquelyn Ramon to send the game to extra innings.
Southeastern's
Alley McDonald (4-3) and HBU ace Emma Guindon (5-2) matched zeroes until the 11
th, when
Lindsey Rizzo and Skains hit back-to-back doubles to give the Lady Lions all the offense it would need to earn the hard-fought victory.
With a lineup that features five new starters and a pitching staff that is a mix of newcomers and veterans handling increased roles, the Lady Lions are growing up in a hurry in their fourth season under head coach
Rick Fremin.
"I'm just really proud of how this group continued to fight these last two days," Fremin commented. "HBU is a good team and to be able to come out of this series with two wins was huge for us. Their best pitcher is really good and for us to be able to pick up two wins against her says a lot for where our team is right now."
Skains (4-for-6, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Manzer (3-for-5, 1 RBI) and
Mima Doucet (2-for-4, 1 RBI) provided production in the middle of the order, while Rizzo scored two runs. McDonald threw nine shutout innings of relief in her longest career outing.
"The 3-4-5 spots in our lineup came up big for us today and were all tough outs all series," Fremin said. "Alley was fantastic all weekend and really gave us a stellar effort in the circle today."
HBU jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning, as a two-run single by Heidi Jaquez and a pair of SLU errors staked the hosts to a 2-0 lead.
SLU tied the game up in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally. Rizzo reached on an error, then scored on a Skains double. After Manzer kept the inning going with an infield single, Doucet snuck a single inside the left field line to plate Skains and knot the score at 2-2.
The tie would last three pitches, as Caitlyn Brockway chased
Karlee Kraft from the game with a solo home run over the centerfield fence to put HBU up, 3-2.
The Huskies would maintain the lead until the Lady Lions took advantage of their last chance in the top of the seventh inning. Ramon led off the frame with a single and promptly stole her team-high 38
th base of the season. After Guindon retired Rizzo and Skains, Manzer extended the game with a game-tying single.
Southeastern mounted the first significant scoring threat of extra frames in the top of the 10
th inning. Manzer doubled and
Ali McCoy singled to give SLU a pair of runners with one out. After
Amberlyn Alfano sacrificed both into scoring position, Guindon retired
Madison Watson to keep the game tied.
After Skains gave SLU the lead, the Huskies put the tying run aboard in the bottom of the 11
th via a one-out single by Autumn Sydlik. However, McDonald retired Haley Melton and Jaquez to close out the road win.
Southeastern will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Alcorn State for a 1 p.m. non-conference contest. SLU fans can receive in-game updates at
