Southeastern Blanked by EKU in Alabama State Tourney Opener

Lady Lions set to face PFW at 9 a.m. and Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team was held to one hit in a 5-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky in the opening game of the Alabama State Black and Gold III Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

The Lady Lions (9-9) saw their scheduled opener with Tennessee Tech postponed by rain, as SLU and EKU (4-8) opened the day's action to ensure each tournament team was able to play at least one game on Friday.

Ali McCoy had the only hit for SLU. Jaquelyn Ramon stole her nation-leading 27th base in the contest and moved within one steal of cracking the Division I career top 25. Ramon has stolen 148 bases – a Southland and school career record - during her three-plus years in Hammond.

Four different Lady Lion pitchers yielded eight hits to the Colonels. Alley McDonald (1-3) allowed two runs in two innings of work to take the loss.

SLU mounted a threat in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey Rizzo walked and Ella Manzer reached on an error to put a pair of runners on. However, Samantha Reynoso (3-1) retired Mima Doucet to keep the Lady Lions off the board.

In the top of the second, EKU mounted its first threat. Sammi Miller tripled with one out, but McDonald retired Carly Robinson and Jaqueline Mercado to keep the game scoreless.

The Colonels took the lead for good in the top of the third inning. A two-run double by Hannah Clark staked Eastern Kentucky to a 2-0 advantage.

Eastern Kentucky doubled the lead for good in top of the fourth inning. A two-run home run by Robinson put EKU ahead, 4-0.

McCoy and Pryscilla Prince drew consecutive walks to put a pair of runners on with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. However, Caroline Manzer flew out to keep SLU off the board.

Eastern Kentucky padded their lead with an RBI double by Emily Corbitt that pushed the lead to 5-0. A double by McCoy and a pair of Ramon walks was all SLU could manage in the final three innings, as the Lady Lions suffered its second shutout loss of the season.

On Saturday, Southeastern will face Purdue Fort Wayne at 9 a.m. and Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. to continue tournament play.
