HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana's
Putri Insani,
Flory Bierma,
Katya Cornejo and
Bernadette Dornieden each won in both singles and doubles play to lead the Lions to a 6-1 victory over LSU Alexandria in the women's tennis home opener Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Southeastern (1-1) swept through doubles play and won five of six singles matches en route to its first win of the spring. The match counted as an exhibition for the visiting Generals.
"We had a great week of practice and it was good to see that work pay off with a good win," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We were very pleased with the attitude and effort in today's victory. We still have work to do, but we're a young team that's going to continue to improve."
In doubles play, Insani and
Ximena Yanez handled the LSU-A pair of Marie Cool and Miljana Milojevic, 6-1, on the No. 1 court. On No. 2, Bierma and Cornejo made short work of Patricia Martinez and Patricia Perez in a 6-2 victory. Dornieden and
Himani Mor completed the doubles sweep on No. 3 with a 6-2 triumph over Katheryne Campos and Niamh Parker, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
SLU made it 2-0 with a win on the No. 6 court. Cornejo earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carolina Guerrero to double the Southeastern lead.
Ceci Mercier put the Lions on the verge of victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Campos.
Minutes later,
Bernadette Dornieden clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cool on the No. 3 court. On No. 5, Bierma made it 5-0 shortly thereafter, with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Martinez.
The match's two most competitive singles contests were on the top two courts. On No. 1, Insani pulled away for a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win over Milojevic. LSU-A avoided the shutout with a win on No. 2, as Parker outlasted SLU's
Vicky Scholz, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-5.
On Sunday, SLU opens a six-match road swing with a 1 p.m. match at Alcorn State (0-2) in Lorman, Mississippi.
