Fremin Reaches Career Win 400 in Doubleheader Sweep at JSU

Lady Lions improve to 28-16 overall with a pair of mercy-rule victories

JACKSON, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana head softball coach Rick Fremin reached the 400-career win plateau with the Lady Lions' non-conference doubleheader sweep at Jackson State Tuesday evening at the JSU Softball Complex.

The Lady Lions (28-16) closed out their non-conference regular season road slate with a pair of run-rule wins to extend their current win streak to five games. Jackson State fell to 8-26 with the road losses.

Fremin is in his third season at Southeastern and his 13th season overall as a head coach. Prior to coming to Hammond, Fremin spent five seasons at JSU, where he collected 138 of his wins, while 76 victories have come during his tenure with the Lady Lions. His first 186 victories came at Belhaven from 2006-10.

"I'm thankful to all the players I've been fortunate to coach, both present and past," Fremin said. "Our players did a great job today and to be able to reach a milestone in a place where we were able to have a lot of success made a little more special."

Southeastern opened the day with a 10-1 mercy-rule victory. Senior Lacey Hill (10-4) held the Lady Tigers to three hits in the complete-game victory, striking out six in the win.

Senior Mahalia Gibson hit a three-run home run to lead SLU's offensive attack, along with fellow senior Kinsey Nichols, who went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the opener.

A nine-run first inning propelled the Lady Lions to a 12-4 victory in the nightcap. Senior Alli Daigle hit her second home run of the season, while junior Rebecca Skains drove in a pair of runs for SLU. Sophomore Alley McDonald (3-4) tossed 4.1 shutout innings to earn the win for the Lady Lions.

Southeastern will return home to host Central Arkansas for a three-game Southland Conference series at North Oak Park. The series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and concludes with a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Friday's doubleheader will be broadcast by the Southeastern Channel and streamed on the Southland Digital Network at www.Southland.org/live. LionVision subscribers will be able to access a live video stream of Saturday's game at www.LionSports.net/watch.

Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 10, Jackson State 1 (6 Innings)
Southeastern struck first in the top of the third inning. Nichols beat out an infield single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by senior Maddie Edmonston to stake the Lady Lions to a 1-0 advantage.

SLU added to its lead in the top of the fourth inning. Skains doubled to left field and scored on a run-scoring single by freshman Madisen Blackford to extend the Lady Lion lead to 2-0. JSU answered in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Southeastern errors to pull within, 2-1.

The Lady Lions got the runs back in the top of the fifth inning. JSU freshman starter Kayla Owens (3-10) hit Daigle, then she advanced to second on an infield single by Nichols. A pair of errors allowed Daigle to score and Nichols would later come home on a grounder by junior Jaquelyn Ramon to put SLU ahead, 4-1.

SLU batted around in the top of the sixth to break the game open. Daigle drove in the inning's first run, Nichols plated two more and Gibson closed out the scoring with a three-run home run to straight away centerfield.

The home run was the 10th of the season for Gibson, who joins former Lady Lions Amber Sather (2013), Rebecca De La Garza (2007), Karin Smith (2004, 2005) and Dee Rancher (1999), as the only players with double-digit home runs in a season. Hill held JSU scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning to enforce the mercy rule.

Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 12, Jackson State 4
Southeastern sent 13 to the plate against JSU sophomore Ashley Sain (2-9) in the top of the first inning. Ramon singled home Edmonston for the first run, then Skains followed up with a two-run single.

Sophomore Mattie Ort then plated Skains with a double into the right centerfield gap. Ort would come home on a triple by sophomore Ali McCoy, who scored on a Jackson State throwing error. Daigle then pulled a solo home run over the right field fence to increase the lead to 7-0.

After Nichols drew a walk, she scored when Edmonston lined a double into the left field corner. Edmonston would score the final run of the inning on a groundout by Gibson as SLU staked McDonald to a 9-0 lead before she entered the circle.

Southeastern added to its lead in the top of the third inning. Nichols walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by senior Peyton Sutton and scored on a JSU throwing error to make it 10-0. An RBI single in the top of the fourth inning by freshman Anna Rodenberg scored freshman Madisen Blackford to increase the lead to 11-0.

The Lions emptied the bench in the bottom of the fourth inning and Jackson State was able to score a pair of unearned runs to get on the board with a three-run frame that cut the lead to 11-3. JSU scratched across another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to temporarily avoid the mercy rule.

Ort scored the game's final run in the bottom of the sixth, as she was hit, moved to second on a groundout by McCoy and then scored on consecutive wild pitches. McDonald ended it by sitting the host Lady Tigers in order in the bottom of the sixth inning to enforce another mercy rule win.
