SLU Splits Extra Inning Decisions on Day Two of Lion Classic II

Lady Lions now 6-1 on the season, will face Detroit on Sunday at noon in tourney finale

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team split a pair of extra-inning games on day two of Lion Classic II Saturday at North Oak Park.

Southeastern (6-1) opened the day with a 6-5 eight-inning victory over Belmont. In the nightcap, Omaha outslugged the Lady Lions, 11-9, in eight innings, handing SLU its first loss of 2018.

In the opener, sophomore Jaquelyn Ramon singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give SLU the win. Senior Lacey Hill (3-0) threw 1.2 innings of relief to earn the win.

Senior first baseman Mahalia Gibson hit her team-high third home run of the season in the nightcap, but Omaha touched up three Southeastern pitchers for 11 hits on the way to the win. Mav first baseman Emma Dargy provided the game-winning runs with a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.

The final day of Lion Classic II opens with Belmont versus Detroit at 10 a.m. The Lady Lions will face Detroit at 12 p.m. to close out the three-day tournament. Live stats and live video for all games on Field One will be available at www.LionSports.net.

Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 6, Belmont 5 (8 Innings)
Belmont struck first versus senior Rachel Hayes in the top of the first inning. Chelsea Thomas singled home Bailey Sims to put the Bruins up, 1-0.
Southeastern came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the first inning. Senior outfielder Kinsey Nichols was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an error by right fielder Haley Baker to knot the game at 1-1.

Hayes and Belmont pitcher Brooklin Lee (1-1) matched zeroes until SLU broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. RBI's by Ramon and Gibson were sandwiched around a pair of unearned runs scored off Belmont errors, as the Lady Lions used a four-run frame to take a 5-1 lead.

Belmont tied it off Hill in the top of the seventh inning, as third baseman Jess Andree hit a game-tying grand slam to send the game to extra innings.

After Southeastern held Belmont scoreless in the top of the eighth, senior Alli Daigle was placed on second to start the Lady Lion eighth. After senior Maddie Edmonston bunted Daigle over to third, Ramon singled home the Rayne, Louisiana native to give SLU its first-ever 6-0 start.

Omaha answered with a four-run top of the second inning. Three SLU errors helped the Mavericks take a 4-1 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long, however. Southeastern batted around in a five-run frame that was highlighted by a two-run single by Gibson and an RBI base hit by Nichols. Omaha would retake the lead with a run in the third and two runs in the fifth, carrying a 7-6 advantage into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gibson led off the frame with a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game. Later in the inning, Daigle was hit by a pitch and scored when freshman catcher Ella Manzer doubled into the centerfield gap, giving SLU an 8-7 lead.

Southeastern had Omaha down to its last out in the top of the seventh inning, before designated player Crystal Pablo tied the game with a home run to force extra inning. Dargy cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the left field fence to give the Mavs an 11-8 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Freshman Anna Rodenberg was placed on second to start the Southeastern eighth inning and eventually scored on an Omaha error. Gibson came to the plate representing the winning run with two outs, but flied out to center to end the game and snap SLU's six-game winning streak.
