SLU Opens Southland Home Slate With 2-1 Victory Over Islanders

Hayes pitches Lady Lions to first league win

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior pitcher Rachel Hayes tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Lady Lions to a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference softball series opener Friday evening at North Oak Park.

SLU (10-15, 1-3 Southland) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win in its league home opener. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-16, 0-1 Southland) lost its fifth straight game.

Hayes (4-5) allowed just one hit and struck out seven to earn the victory in the circle. The Islanders pulled within one against freshman reliever Alley McDonald in the seventh, but Lady Lion senior Kasey Nielson nailed down the final three outs to earn her first save of the season.

Junior infielder Mahalia Gibson was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Southeastern at the plate, while sophomore shortstop Jaquelyn Ramon and junior outfielder Peyton Sutton scored SLU's runs. AMCC pitcher Liz Carter (4-9) was the tough luck loser for the Islanders, scattering four hits and striking out 11 in the complete-game effort.

Southeastern threatened Carter in the bottom of the first inning. Singles by Gibson and Ramon put a pair of runners on with one out, but Carter recovered to fan freshman designated player Mattie Ort and junior catcher Carlie Whittington to keep SLU off the board.

The Islanders mounted their lone threat against Hayes in the top of the third inning. Mariah Clay singled to lead off the frame, then Savannah Sandoval reached on an error by SLU freshman second baseman Ali McCoy to put a pair on with no outs. Hayes was unfazed, retiring the next three Islanders to keep the game scoreless.

Southeastern scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the third. Carter hit Sutton to open the inning, then junior outfielder Maddie Edmonston promptly bunted Sutton over to second. Ramon then reached on an error to put runners at the corners with one out.

With Gibson at the plate, Ramon took off for second. Clay took her eye off the ball and the passed ball allowed Ramon to advance to third and Sutton to walk in for the inning's first run. Three pitches later, Gibson ripped a double off the left field fence to score Ramon and give SLU a 2-0 advantage.

Hayes and Carter silenced the bats over the next three innings. The Islanders made it interesting in the seventh inning, as Aspen Auger greeted McDonald with a towering solo home run over the left centerfield fence.

Nielson came in to relieve McDonald and quickly got two outs on a pair of pop outs. Clay's second hit of the game put the tying run on base, but Nielson bore down to force Sandoval to fly out to center for the game's final out.

The series will conclude with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at North Oak Park. LionVision subscribers can access a live video stream (no audio) for the twin bill at www.LionSports.net/watch.
