SLU Closes Troy Classic With Victory Over Host Trojans

Hayes, McDonald, Gibson lead Lady Lions (8-6) to 2-1 win

TROY, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Troy Classic Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex.

In the opening game of the day, Southeastern (8-6) fell to No. 19 Pittsburgh (12-2), 5-0. Panther pitcher Kayla Harris (6-1) threw a perfect game to lead Pitt to victory. Harris and SLU junior Lacey Hill were locked in a 1-0 pitcher's duel, until Pittsburgh blew open the game with a four-run seventh inning.

In the final game of the tournament, SLU edged host Troy (9-6), 2-1. Junior Rachel Hayes (2-3) earned the victory in the circle, while freshman Alley McDonald tossed 2.1 innings of shutout relief to earn her first collegiate save. Junior infielder Mahalia Gibson led the Lady Lions at the plate with three hits, while freshman designated player Mattie Ort added two hits.

Southeastern will return home on Tuesday, hosting Mississippi State for a 5 p.m. at North Oak Park. Live stats and video (no audio) will be accessible at www.LionSports.net.

Game One – No. 19 Pittsburgh 5, Southeastern Louisiana 0
Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with no outs to chase SLU sophomore pitcher Caitlyn VanHemelryck (0-2) from the game. Hill came in and limited the damage to one run, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Harris and Hill matched zeroes for the next five innings, as Hill held the nationally-ranked Panthers to one hit and Harris retired every Lady Lion she faced.

Pittsburgh finally got to Hill in the top of the seventh inning. A two-run single by McKayla Taylor and a two-run double by Alexis Solak extended the Panther advantage to 5-0.

Harris retired junior outfielder Maddie Edmonston, McDonald and Gibson in the bottom of the seventh inning to close out the perfect game.

Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 2, Troy 1
Southeastern scored all the runs it would need off Troy starter Claire Graves (3-1) in the top of the third inning. DeLee walked, Gibson reached on a fielder's choice and Ort beat out an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Graves uncorked a wild pitch to score DeLee.

After senior third baseman Mychal Truxillo drew a walk to reload the bases, a Graves pitch got away from catcher Kaylee Hussey to allow Gibson to score and give SLU a 2-0 lead.

Hayes did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. Becca Hartley singled and scored on a two-out RBI single by Stephanie Snyder to chase Hayes from the game. McDonald forced Logan Calhoun to ground out to maintain a 2-1 lead.

Troy would threaten in the sixth, as Cassidy McDilda walked and Carli Kayler singled to put a pair of runners on with two outs. McDonald retired Brooke Echols with a comebacker to the circle to hang on to the one-run advantage.

The host Trojans would mount one last rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Erica Davis walked and Meg Willis singled to put two runners on with two outs. Katie Webb followed with a single to load the bases, but McDonald shook it off by forcing Madeline Porter to fly out to secure the victory.
