SLU Splits Pair on Day Two of Lion Classic II

Lady Lions now 5-2 on the young season

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team split a pair of games on day two of Lion Classic II Saturday evening at North Oak Park.

In the opener, Southeastern (5-2) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Middle Tennessee State for a 6-5 victory. Juniors Maddie Edmonston, Kinsey Nichols and Mahalia Gibson all recorded RBI's in the win for Southeastern. Freshman Ali McCoy (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings of two-hit relief to earn her first collegiate victory.

In the nightcap, Southeast Missouri pitcher Madeline Krumrey held SLU to four hits in a complete-game shutout effort, pitching the Redhawks to a 2-0 victory.

Southeastern will close out the tournament with an 11 a.m. game versus Morehead State on Sunday. Live stats and live video (no audio) will be available for games on Field One only at www.LionSports.net.

Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 6, Middle Tennessee State 5
MTSU jumped on SLU sophomore Caitlyn VanHemelryck in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Kirstyn Cuccia doubled home the frame's first run, then runs scored on a passed ball and an illegal pitch later in the inning.

In the top of the third inning, Middle Tennessee State added to its lead. Summer Burgess doubled to lead off the turn and later scored on a wild pitch to give MTSU a 4-0 lead.

Edmonston stole home in the fourth and freshman Mattie Ort stole home in the fifth to cut the Middle Tennessee State lead in half. MTSU scored an insurance run on an RBI double by Austyn Whaley to take a 5-2 lead into the final at-bat.

Junior Carlie Whittington reached on an error, McCoy reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Jaquelyn Ramon singled to load the bases with one out. Edmonston then drew a bases loaded walk to force in the inning's first run.
Nichols then reached on an error by Whaley that allowed McCoy and Whittington to score and tie the score. Gibson then lifted a fly ball deep enough to centerfield to allow Edmonston to race home for the game-winning run.
