HAMMOND – Mississippi State collected 12 hits on the way to an 8-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference softball action Monday evening at North Oak Park.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Lady Lions (9-2). The Bulldogs remained undefeated with the win, improving to 10-0 in 2016.
MSU scored in every inning against a pair of SLU pitchers – junior
Kasey Nielson (1-1) and senior
Taylor Bishop. Mississippi State freshman Regan Green (2-0) held Southeastern to three hits and struck out five on the way to the complete-game shutout.
Senior shortstop
Katie Lacour, sophomore outfielder
Kinsey Nichols and freshman outfielder
Jaquelyn Ramon were the only Lady Lions to collect a hit on Monday. Sophomore designated player
Carlie Whittington also drew a walk.
Mississippi State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as the game's first three batters collected extra-base hits. The Bulldogs added one run in each of the next three innings to extend the lead to 6-0.
Southeastern's only scoring threat came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nichols followed a Whittington walk with an infield single to put a pair of runners on with one out. Green recovered, however, retiring senior first baseman
Amber Sather and junior third baseman
Mychal Truxillo to keep the Lady Lions off the board.
In the fifth inning, Mississippi State added two runs to push the lead to 8-0. Green retired the Lady Lions in order in the bottom of the fifth inning to enforce the mercy rule and secure the victory.
Monday's game closed out an 11-game home stand for SLU. The Lady Lions will open their road slate this weekend, competing in the Gulfport Invitational in Gulfport, Mississippi. Southeastern will open tournament play on Friday with a 3 p.m. contest versus Southern Mississippi.
