HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team split its two games on day two of the Lion Classic Saturday afternoon at Chappapeela Park.
Southeastern (2-1) opened the day with a 5-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha (1-2). Junior
Taylor Bishop (1-0) pitched SLU to victory, holding UNO to one hit in a complete-game effort. Junior
Katie Lacour led the Lady Lions at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, Southeastern fell to Tennessee-Martin (3-1), 6-1. Senior
Vanessa Eng drove in SLU's lone run, while Lacour extended her hitting streak to 14 games.
Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday, closing the tournament with a 10 a.m. game versus UT Arlington.
Game 1 – Southeastern Louisiana 5, Nebraska-Omaha 1Southeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lacour led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a single by freshman
Shelby Stewart and scored on a UNO throwing error.
SLU padded its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eng and senior
Teresa Lemos reached on consecutive errors, then freshman
Kinsey Nichols drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Lacour then laced a single through the left side to score Eng, while freshman
Grace DeLee would score as well on a Nebraska-Omaha error. Later in the inning, junior
Amanda Livaudais' sacrifice fly scored Nichols to push the SLU lead to 4-0.
Bishop took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. With one out, Nicole Warren hit a solo home run inside the left foul line to cut the lead to 4-1.
Southeastern got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore
Mychal Truxillo singled and scored later in the inning on a RBI single by Lemos. UNO would get no closer, as Bishop held the Mavericks scoreless over the final two innings.
Game Two – Tennessee-Martin 6, Southeastern Louisiana 1UTM jumped on senior
Spencer Adkinson in the top of the first inning. Carly Gonzales led off the game with a home run to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. UTM added another run in the top of the second to take a 2-0 advantage.
Adkinson pitched around trouble over the next two innings, before UTM added to its lead in the top of the fifth. A double steal and an RBI single by Jodie Duncan put the Skyhawks ahead, 4-0. UTM added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by Kenzi Tate.
After stranding five runners in the first five innings, SLU finally scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior
Megan Moore beat out an infield single to lead off the inning. Freshman
Peyton Stokes-Sutton came in to run for Moore and later scored on a Eng single. However, Southeastern would get no closer, as UTM pitcher Elizabeth Wiegand struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning.
