FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame member Sarah Gascon, who starred on both the softball diamond and volleyball court, was named to the Southland Conference All-Time Softball Roster, which was released by the league office on Thursday.
The team was released in conjunction with the Southland Conference commemorating its 50
th anniversary. The roster consists of over 80 student-athletes that starred on the diamond, including 11 players that earned first team All-Southland honors in each of their four seasons.
Gascon was a four-time All-Southland Conference third baseman for head softball coach
Pete Langlois from 2001-04. She was a first team selection as a sophomore, a second team choice as a junior and earned third team notice as a freshman and senior.
She also made a major impact as a member of the volleyball team. The San Pedro, Calif. native twice led the nation in digs per game and finished her career third in NCAA history with 2,109 digs, setting school, Southland Conference and state of Louisiana records. She set the NCAA and Southland Conference single-season record of 786 digs and a 6.66 per game average in 2003 and posted the fourth-best career average (4.78) in NCAA history. Gascon was named the Southland Conference's Defensive Player of the Week a record 13 times, including a period of nine consecutive weeks in 2003.
The 2002-03 Southeastern Student-Athlete of the Year, Gascon was inducted into the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. She still remains involved in athletics to this day, as she is currently competing as a member of the United States handball team.
The Southland Conference developed a metric that measured real-time honors throughout the league's softball history that dates back to 1983. A premium was placed on first team all-conference selections, individual honors, season and career statistics, and postseason success. In addition to the four-time all-conference choices, the all-time team also includes 11 student-athletes that were named to the all-conference first team on three occasions, and 45 student-athletes that were two time All-Southland picks.
Also, the league tabbed Sarah Dawson of Louisiana-Monroe as its all-time pitcher, third baseman Jessica Rogers of UTSA as its all-time hitter and Texas State's Ricci Woodard as its all-time coach.
